North by 35 – A Denton Thing

This is a super busy weekend for little Denton. The North by 35 Conferette is happening… which may not seem like just a whole lot to you, but to me, to me it is a big deal. I have an enormous love and passion for this city – we moved away for one year with intent to come back, but we didn’t just move back (we only lived twenty minutes south) we RAN back. Because, you see, Denton is AMAZING. There is something in the air here, or the water, or the people, or whatever you want to call it that is changing, we are on the cusp of something huge here in Denton. And a weekend like this enlivens not only the city, but many of the city’s people (me included) to continue to grow this city well.

The Nx35 Conferette is a music conference that show cases indie bands from around the country, along with local bands who are growing in popularity. We have acts like Doug Burr, Seryn, Big Boi, Mavis Staples, Sarah Jaffe, Mister Heavenly, and the Local Natives showing up and playing for the crowds that come to and from Denton to support talented musicians and artists who are keeping the music scene inspiring.

But for me personally, it reminds me of my goals as a future small business owner. It reminds me that I want to live and work and contribute and give back to a unique community that I find value in. It reminds me of why we are buying a house here, and starting a family here, and doing community work here. And I can’t help but be overflowing with love and compassion for the city where I live – where I truly LIVE – not just where we sleep – and not want to be a part of the change for the better that is happening here.
